The calculator uses as a consistent rate of return of 8% per year. The Calgary Foundation's endowment portfolio's actual rate of return for the ten years ending March 31, 2006 was 8.65%; future rates of return are unknown. The calculator further assumes we will each year disburse 5% of the market value of the endowment to charities as grants, and that an average of 1% of the market value of the fund will be allocated to administration costs.

Current Calgary Foundation policy states that for each newly endowed fund no amount will be available for granting until the following anniversary date of the establishment of the fund. Each subsequent fiscal year, an amount equal to 5% of the market value of the fund at the end of the previous fiscal year will be available for granting.
